Stress Management
Stress: the problem
The increasing demands of modern life put enormous pressure on the mind and body. Some pressure is part of life and is not necessarily a bad thing: it is a normal response to danger - positive pressure provides the spur to achieve. But when pressure builds up stress arises. Stress is adverse to pressure, and long-term it can affect you physically, emotionally and spiritually, impacting on your wellbeing.
Causes of stress:
There is an enormous spectrum of stressors (causes of stress) – from the relatively routine ring of the telephone to something life-threatening such as a car crash. Major life events, such as moving home, birth, marriage, divorce, death, environmental factors, such as noise, flashing lights, overcrowding, pollution; lifestyle, including poor diet and lack of sleep and exercise – these are just some of the things that contribute to stress.
Although your temperament, constitution and previous experiences moderate the effects of stress, the more stressors there are, the less you are able to deal with them effectively.
